Blazer baseball falls at N. Florida
In Jacksonville, Fla., North Florida scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull away for a 13-9 victory over Valdosta State Wednesday.
The Ospreys jumped on VSU starter Render Parkman, scoring four runs in the first, but the Blazers struck back with four in the second to tie the score. After UNF scored twice in the third, the Blazers plated three in the top of the fourth, to go ahead 7-6. But the lead would be short-lived, as UNF scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead, 8-7. Then five Ospreys crossed the plate in the sixth. VSU scored twice in the eighth, but it wasn't enough.
At the plate, Blazer shortstop Robert Morgan extended his hitting streak to 31 games, going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Ryan Chromek was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Micah Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. John McDonald, Greg Adams and Scott Brinson also drove in runs for VSU. North Florida's Matt Oxendine was 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in six runs, while teammate Phil Gaby drove in three. Brooks West (1-1) was the winner.
Parkman (0-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, and seven hits in four innings.
In Adel, Cook defeated Tift County 7-2 Wednesday.
Jonathan Fulghum got the win, pitching a complete game, scattering 10 hits and striking out four.
At the plate, Blake Mainor was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a two-run home run. Neal Jones was 2-for-4 with a triple, while Justin Ray was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Cook travels to Brooks County at 6 p.m. today.
In Blackshear Tuesday night, Berrien defeated Pierce County 3-2.
Jordan Stokes got the win, allowing seven hits and one earned run in five innings. Jonathan Nichols went 2-for-3 with a run, Sonny Lewis was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Tyler Copeland was 2-for-4 with a run, and Jon Temples had two RBI.
Berrien (14-7, 7-2 region) is now tied with Brantley County for first in Region 2-AA. The Rebels host Charlton County at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
In Waycross, Lowndes' junior varsity tennis teams defeated Ware County.
Lowndes' boys won 6-0. Andrew Odom won 8-2, Stephen Keener won 8-6, Andrew Smith won 8-1, Stephen Sparks won 8-1 and 8-1, and Perry Pulido and Chris Shipman teamed for an 8-2 win.
Lowndes' girls won 6-2. Courtney Tubbs won 8-5 and 8-1, Jennifer Cussman won 8-5, Savannah Roberts won 8-3, and Ashley Samaras won 8-6. Cussman and Roberts teamed for an 8-1 win.
