VALDOSTA -- Lowndes head coach Randy McPherson and Colquitt's head man Mike Singletary have been good friends ever since McPherson joined Region 1-AAAAA.

The two generally talk every week about each other's next game and so far both have been pretty happy Monday morning quarterbacks. Lowndes is 5-0 on the season and Colquitt is 4-1 heading into the opening week of Region 1-AAAAA play.

"(Singletary) is a good friend of mine," McPherson said. "I've only known him for 2 1/2 years, but I know he's a great coach."

This week, McPherson and Singletary butt heads Friday when Lowndes and Colquitt kickoff at 8 p.m. inside Martin Stadium.

McPherson has a 2-0 advantage over Singletary in their previous two meetings, 27-0 last year in Moultrie and 21-14 in 2002.

Despite having to play each other Friday, the two still talked on Monday. The subject: weather.

On the subject of weather, Monday's cancellation of school didn't stop the Vikings from practicing. Lowndes practiced at Westside School's practice field. McPherson said most of the Vikings were able to make it, but there were one or two absences.

McPherson said one of his players had to miss practice because he had no road. It had been washed out by the rain and couldn't be driven on.

"We asked if we could come and get him and he said, 'Coach, you can't get here,'" McPherson said.

Lowndes will have Octavius Everett and Darriet Perry for Friday's game. Everett practiced this week after taking a hard hit on his knee two weeks ago against Ware County. Perry is battling a nagging hamstring injury.

For the next five weeks, all six region teams will play five straight region games to determine the top four seeds. After a somewhat down year last season, this year's region may be one of the strongest in the state overall.

"I don't know (how good the region is) yet," McPherson said, "but everybody has had success."

Five of the six teams in the region have winning records after the non-region slate, with Houston at 2-2-1 after playing Northside-Warner Robins and Warner Robins High, two of the top teams in Class AAAA. Region teams have combined to go 22-7-1 this season.

Lowndes' B-team game with Coffee County today has been canceled (Coffee also canceled the season opener). Lowndes' ninth graders will play at Tift County at 5 p.m. today.
