MARIETTA -- Valdosta YMCA swimmer Brandy Eby placed in two events Saturday at the state GRPA championships held at the Mountain View Aquatic Center.
Eby, 15, finished fourth in the girls 15-18 100 individual medley (in a team record 1:08.70) and eighth in the girls 15-18 50 butterfly.
Three individuals and a relay team also set team records, leaving Cobb County with six new marks.
Lance Wilkes (7-8 boys) set team records in the 50 freestyle (45.49) and 25 backstroke (22.91). Madison Marshall (9-10 girls) set a record in the 100 individual medley (1:29.22) and Shannon Eby (11-12 girls) in the 100 individual medley (1:14.97).
The 7-8 girls' 100 medley relay team (Ashley Powell, Mary Alice Smoot, Shelby Trimble and Taylor Grantham) bested their record time from the district meet, swimming in event in 1:35.13.
"The kids have rose to the competition again," said Piranha head coach Jennifer Combellick.
"Our kids dealt with the pressure and noise here like champs. They just shrug it off and swim their best," said parents group leader Curt Pollard. "It's not everyday an 8-year-old has to swim in front of 2,000 screaming people."
Ten other swimmers set personal-best times. They included Craig Smoot (9-10 boys, 50 freestyle and 25 freestyle); Austin Wilkes (9-10 boys, 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke); Taylor Grantham (7-8 girls, 25 breaststroke and 25 backstroke); Shelby Trimble (7-8 girls, 25 freestyle and 25 butterfly); Ashley Powell (7-8 girls, 100 individual medley and 25 butterfly); Mary Alice Smoot (7-8 girls, 25 backstroke and 25 butterfly); Amber Rickman (15-18 girls, 100 freestyle and 100 individual medley); Jordan Rickman (11-12 boys, 50 freestyle); Sullivan Pollard (11-12 boys, 100 individual medley and 50 butterfly) and Shannon Eby (11-12 girls, 50 butterfly).
The Piranha open fall practice on Aug. 16, 4:30 p.m., at the Valdosta YMCA pool. Included in the competitive schedule is the Piranha's Fall Frenzy Invitational in late September.
