VALDOSTA -- The Valdosta State Lady Blazers' sixth win of the season didn't come in dominant fashion, but it did come.
Valdosta State overcame a slow offensive night from the floor with stifling defense in a 44-34 win over Eckerd College on the first night of the Lady Blazer Guest House Innvitational.
"The bottom line is we got a W," Lady Blazers' head coach Kiley Hill said.
After trailing by as many as 17 early in the second half, Eckerd fired back with eight consecutive points to pull within nine at 31-22 with 11:53 left in the game.
Eckerd cut the Lady Blazer lead to seven at 39-32 on KC Gavin's three with 3:58 to play, but Valdosta State held on down the stretch, hitting five of six foul shots in the final two minutes.
"We just couldn't get a rhythm offensively," Hill said. "But we had a great defensive effort. We had probably 75-plus defensive possessions and only about two or three breakdowns."
Candice Ferrell led the Lady Blazers (6-0) with 15 points and three blocks, while Monica Lee added 10 points and eight boards.
Leading 13-9 with 8:10 to play in the first half, the Lady Blazers ran off on a 13-0 run ending in Candice Ferrell's two free throws with 19 seconds remaining before halftime. Ferrell scored six of her 10 first half points during the run, leading Valdosta State to a 26-11 lead at intermission.
"We got frustrated because we had the shots, they just weren't going in," Ferrell said. "I think that might have been because we didn't have our legs, but I was proud of our defensive intensity."
The Lady Blazer offense started slow scoring just four points in the first seven minutes of the first half, but its defense picked up the slack. Eckerd (2-4) didn't score until Erika Siauciunas's lay-in at the 12:15 mark in the first half, almost eight minutes into the game.
Valdosta State plays Saint Leo today at 6 p.m. The Lady Blazers beat Saint Leo 73-62 Nov. 24 on the road.
