Luukas Alakulppi used five birdies in the second round of U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier, beating out Ryan Stachler and Will Chandler for the fourth and final qualifying spot Tuesday at University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens.

Alakulppi, a Valdosta High student, finished 2-over par for the 36-hole qualifier that saw its second round postponed until Tuesday due to severe weather Monday afternoon. The delay didn’t hurt Alakulppi at all as the member of the Wildcats golf team birdied the fifth, seventh, 12th, 13th and 15th holes in his final round on the way to a 2-under round of 69.

That allowed Alakulppi to rebound from a first round 75 that saw him tied for 19th place. Alakulppi recorded no birdies in the first round Monday morning and shot a 75.

His second round, though, tied tournament winner Steven Fisk and Spencer Ralston for low rounds of the tournament. Fisk shot 4-under for the tournament, edging out Ralston by one stroke. Bryson Nimmer was the third qualifier, shooting even-par both rounds.

The 67th annual U.S. Junior Amateur championship will be held July 21-26 at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.
