LAKELAND -- Lanier County wrapped up the Region 1-A softball tournament title with a 6-2 victory over Clinch County Thursday. Lanier, who also won the regular season region title, is 22-0 in region softball play the last two years.

Kendra Dent was the winning pitcher, pitching a two-hitter and striking out six batters.

Ebony Sealy had an RBI single, Danielle Calhoun an RBI triple, and Samantha Bailey an RBI double. Brittany West had a triple and a double for the Lady Bulldogs, while Erica Bradley stole three bases.

Lanier (25-2) will be the No. 1 seed in sectionals, set for next Saturday in Dublin. Clinch will be 1-A's second seed, and Echols County will be third after defeating Ware Magnet in Thursday's consolation game.


VALDOSTA -- Valdosta High's ninth-grade team routed Lowndes High's freshmen 42-6 Thursday night at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

Demetrius James rushed for two touchdowns, and Octavius Patrick, Javonte Anderson, O.J. Carter and Jamil Chandler also ran for touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Valdosta (6-0) hosts Lee County next Thursday at 6 p.m. in the team's season finale.


MOULTRIE -- Curtis Reed scored three touchdowns as Valdosta High's junior varsity defeated Colquitt County 28-14 Thursday night.

Reed caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Scott Shuman, and also scored on runs of 65 and 45 yards. Torris Williams scored on a one-yard run for VHS.

Defensively, Jesse Marshall made nine tackles, Jarvis Stokes made eight and Lamar Berrien six for the Wildcats.

Valdosta (2-1) hosts Coffee next Thursday.


WAYCROSS -- Lowndes High's junior varsity defeated Ware County 13-6 Thursday. Bryan Sermons scored on a six-yard run, and Will Hardesty caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Randy J. Williams.

Diondrick Smith rushed for 85 yards, Kurtis Schmidt kicked an extra point, and Pepper Carter had an interception for the Vikings.


VALDOSTA -- J.L. Newbern's eighth grade team defeated Valdosta Middle 33-0 Thursday on Cleveland Field. Michael Scott scored on runs of 40 and 35 yards for Newbern.

Also for Newbern, Michael Turner threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Nelson, Sidney Bivens scored on a 45-yard punt return and Marcus McNair scored on a 20-yard run. Curtis Witherspoon kicked three extra points.

Newbern (3-2) travels to Hahira next week.


MOULTRIE -- Hahira Middle's eighth grade team defeated Colquitt County 20-14 in overtime Thursday. Darriet Perry's second 2-yard touchdown run of the night gave the Vikings the lead, and John Cooper's interception sealed the victory for HMS.

Todd Frierson scored on a 3-yard run for Hahira's other score. Hahira travels to Newbern Thursday at 5 p.m.


ADEL -- Cook Middle opened the Deep South Conference playoffs with a 26-0 rout of Irwin County Thursday at Cook Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback David Arnold threw for two touchdowns and ran for another one to lead the Hornets. Tevin Simms also ran for a touchdown. Cook Middle's defense, which has not been scored on at home all season, held Irwin to two first downs.

Cook (7-0) will host the conference final against the Fitzgerald - Brooks County winner next Thursday.
