VALDOSTA -- In the eyes of God, the Gulf South Conference and Lady Blazer fans, the Valdosta State women's basketball team is 14-2 overall, 3-1 in the GSC East.

In the eyes of the NCAA, the Lady Blazers are 13-2 and have yet to be credited for a quality win. That's why VSU is ranked No. 10 in the first South Region poll released Wednesday by the Division II basketball committee.

"I thought we'd be higher, but it's early," said VSU head coach Kiley Hill, who is also a member of the South Region's advisory committee. " If I wasn't on the committee, I'd be upset at being No. 10. The people on our committee are doing a great and logical job of advising."

What hasn't counted yet is VSU's 49-48 win over No. 8 Lincoln Memorial. The game was played Monday night, and the NCAA's cutoff for games considered by the committee is noon Sunday.

However, Lincoln Memorial (13-4 after Monday's loss) was the lone team in the top 10 to lose either on Monday or Tuesday.

The poll is topped by Sunshine State Conference leader Rollins (14-3) and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Clark Atlanta (13-1). GSC West co-leaders Christian Brothers (11-2) and Delta State (12-2) are the Nos. 3 and 4 teams, with GSC East leader West Alabama fifth at 11-4.

"With the Lincoln win and a win against West Alabama, we could move up to fifth," Hill said.

Oh yes, West Alabama comes to Valdosta Saturday night (5:30 p.m. tipoff), then goes to No. 9 West Florida (11-4) on Monday. VSU is at West Florida on Jan. 31.

Delta State goes to No. 7 Central Arkansas (12-6) tonight, then hosts Christian Brothers Monday. Delta State has won 12 straight since a 1-2 start.

"There's still a lot of games to be played. If we take care of business, we'll move up," Hill said. "It's going to be topsy-turvy the next week.

"All I'm going to worry about is how we finish at the end. And all we can worry about is one game at a time."

Rounding out the poll is No. 6 Fort Valley State (11-3). Clark Atlanta and FVSU meet twice in February.

NOTES: VSU's 14 wins are one short of the 15 Hill's teams won in 2000-01 and 2002-03 ... In this week's national Division II statistics, VSU is ranked No. 3 in scoring defense (49.5 points) and No. 20 in field goal percentage (46.5) and field goal percentage defense (35.1). Sophomore forward Candice Ferrell is ninth in field goal percentage (62.1).
