SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — After falling to Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night, the Valdosta State softball team rebounded to defeat West Georgia, 10-5, on Saturday night to advance to the final day of the Gulf South Conference tournament.

VSU (45-6) was first to score, scoring three runs in the first and three in the second inning. Amy Gaiss and Audrey Massingill each homered.

West Georgia (33-32) got on the board in the third inning, when Kim Weaver singled in Celia Petty, who had also singled in the inning. The Blazers answered right back, scoring another run in the same inning off a double down the left field line from Collis, scoring Trele Edwards.

The Wolves scored two more runs in the next two innings, while Valdosta State grabbed three runs of their own. Down 10-3 heading into the seventh, West Georgia gave the Blazers a scare. Mary Carlisle led off with a double and would score off a single from Jamie Van Haltern, while Jessie Wise, who walked, would score off a single from Paige Hansen. With two outs, Lindsey Kragt struck out swinging to end the game.

Collis (19-1) picked up the win for the Blazers, giving up three hits and striking out three in three innings. Ashley Hill pitched two innings, giving up three hits, while Ashley Mayhue closed out the game, pitching the final two innings and giving up four hits, while striking out two. Telecia Ramsey was 2-for-4, while Collis was 4-for-4 with two RBI’s.

VSU will take on Arkansas-Monticello at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. If they win, they will advance to the championship game.
