VALDOSTA -- Early line on the 2004 Valdosta State baseball team? No lead is safe -- for the opposition.

Three games into the season, the Blazers are 3-0. In all three games, VSU has come from behind to get the victory.

Saturday at Billy Grant Field was no different. VSU defeated Barry, 4-3 in nine innings and 7-3, in the home opener.

The two teams play again at 1 p.m. today (radio: 1450 AM) with lefty Parks Robinson getting the start.

"Except for a lack of clutch hitting, especially in the first game, I couldn't be more pleased with what's happened so far," said VSU head coach Tommy Thomas. "I couldn't ask for more from our pitchers, and that was one of our question marks."

In game one, the Blazers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game-winner in the ninth on an infield error.

In the nightcap, VSU scored six fourth-inning runs to overturn a 2-1 deficit.

The ninth-inning run was a gift after VSU gave away opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings.

"We've got to be more efficient than that," said Thomas, pointing to a lack of production from his lineup's left-handed hitters. "But it's evident this team doesn't give up. i like the attitude."

With one out, Micah Smith reached on an infield single. He went to second on a passed ball and third on an infield grounder.

Matt Rucker followed with a grounder to short, but shortstop Alex Meneses fumbled the baseball and couldn't throw out Rucker at first. Meanwhile, Smith raced home with the winning run.

The Blazers tied the game in the seventh. Greg Connell's double to right-center scored pinch-runner Ryan Chromek (after Greg Adams' single).

After a strikeout, reliever Jesse Naber gave up Robert Morgan's single to center. Render Parkman was intentionally walked, and Smith walked to force pinch-runner Scott Brinson with the tying run.

But a fielder's choice got the second out at the plate, and a fly out ended the inning.

VSU loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but a missed squeeze bunt got Chromek tagged out at the plate. A strikeout ended the inning.

Michael Martinez (1-0) got the win, striking out four in four innings of shutout relief. Starter Zach Stewart struck out six in five innings, allowing five hits and three walks.

In the nightcap, VSU got six hits off three Barry pitchers in the fourth to turn the game around.

Greg Adams had a two-RBI double down the left field line for the inning's most productive hit. Jermaine Johnson (2-for-4), Morgan and Connell (2-for-3) also had RBI hits.

David Lewis and John McDonald also had two hits in the 12-hit game.

Robbie Wachman (1-0) struck out five, allowing six hits and three walks, in four innings to get the win. Nickolas Kitchens added two innings of hitless relief, striking out two.

With the losses, Barry fell to 1-2.
