The VSU volleyball's home winning streak came to a halt at three when the Blazers lost 5-2 to Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday.

The Blazers (5-11) were leading 24-20 in the fourth set, but couldn't put the match away as UAH (11-2) picked up the 30-25 victory and then finished it with a 15-9 ledger in the fifth set.

VSU junior Laura-Lee Atkinson paced both teams scoring 29 kills.

The Blazers host North Alabama at 6 p.m. Saturday.


Lowndes High's junior varsity defeated Colquitt County 35-12 Thursday night at Martin Stadium.

Juwan Smith scored on runs of 18 and 30 yards, while Greg Anderson scored on runs of 35 and 6 yards. Ronnie Mitchell connected with Kelly Dawsey on a 55-yard touchdown pass.

Andrew Bihl kicked three extra points and Matt Rowland two for the Vikings (3-0).


Lowndes football's ninth grade squad improved to 3-0 on a 27-14 victory against Ware County Thursday.

Gerald Demps ran in two touchdowns, scampering in from five yards on both.

Tyrone Robinson also ran in a score, rushing from 10 yards out.

The longest score of the game came when Brandon Fox ran back a 55-yard fumble recovery.

The Vikings will take on Colquitt Thursday.


Lowndes Middle School defeated Coffee 24-21 Thursday in Douglas. Garrett Jenkins scored two touchdowns and three two-point conversions, and rushed for 90 yards, while Jerry Postell ran for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Jenkins got Lowndes on the board with a 9-yard first quarter run, then ran in the conversion for an 8-0. Coffee came back with a pair of touchdowns to go ahead 15-8. But Jenkins' 5-yard run right before halftime gave the Vikings a 16-15 lead at the half.

Coffee retook the lead in the third quarter, but Postell's fourth quarter touchdown, combined with Jenkins' conversion, put Lowndes ahead to stay.

Defensively, Jimmy Baisden had five tackles and a fumble recovery for Lowndes (3-0), while Postell had four tackles and Deon Chappell had four tackles and an interception.


Lanier County's softball team shut out Echols County 9-0 Thursday, as Brooke Mathis pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 13 batters for the Lady Bulldogs.

Shaie Reynolds had a home run and three RBI, while Mathis went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jessica Gaskins, Jera Dent, Brittany Livingston and Erica Livingston also drove in runs for Lanier (7-3, 4-0 in Region 1-A).

Lanier's junior varsity also won, 19-1. Hannah Pearson tossed a one-hitter, while Alli Russ went 3-for-4 with a home run.


Valdosta Middle School softball picked up two victories Thursday, defeating Cook County 7-1 and 4-1 in doubleheader action.

Amanda Smith won the first game, holding Cook to one hit throughout five innings while striking out five batters.

Bridgette Walker also pitched well, allowing one hit and eight strikeouts in game two.

The Lady Cats travels to Lee County this weekend to play in the Third Annual Lady Trojan Diamond Classic Tournament.
