A sinkhole opened up Monday night at 5100 Snake Nation Road in Lowndes County after someone drove over the spot and heard the road cave in behind him. The sinkhole is about 15 feet deep, 12 feet wide and 20 feet long. The road will remain open to local traffic only at Bird Hall Road and Shiloh Road until repairs are made. This morning, County Engineer Mike Fletcher will meet with a soil engineer who will conduct specialized testing in an effort to determine the exact area that has been affected as well as the type of sinkhole that has occurred. Next, County Engineering staff will meet with Interim Public Works Director Robin White to develop a plan for restoration. According to Fletcher, the sinkhole will have to be excavated until a stable base can be determined. Lowndes County Emergency Management discourages anyone who might be tempted to disregard barricades to get a closer look. Sink holes are extremely unstable and give way without warning.
