THUMBS UP: To Kelly Strozier of South Georgia Coalition to End Homelessness and Dr. Shawn Vandemark of Vandemark Plastic Surgery for giving Tom McCament a new nose. Cancer left McCament with only a piece of cartilage for a nose. Strozier and the Coalition helped treat McCament’s cancer, but Strozier kept searching for a doctor to help restore his nose. After Strozier’s calls, Vandemark was the only one who agreed to see McCament, whose face is now restored.

THUMBS UP: To Aaron Strickland and Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful for again sponsoring “Bring One for the Chipper.” This annual campaign gives people several locations to drop off their old Christmas trees while keeping the trees from overloading the area’s landfill. The discarded trees are chipped into mulch or used as wildlife habitat.

THUMBS UP: To readers and contributors to The Valdosta Daily Times Empty Stocking Fund for donating more than $20,500 to help local kids have a better Christmas. Also, thumbs up to our Empty Stocking partners: the Salvation Army and Guardian Bank.

THUMBS UP: Clyattville for not only hosting its first Christmas parade but for making the parade a success despite last weekend’s rains.

THUMBS DOWN: To reports of vandalism and thefts of Christmas and holiday decorations from residences and businesses throughout the community. While some may have thought these were harmless pranks, those whose holidays were spoiled by these antics are not amused.
