THUMBS UP: To members of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority board for unanimously choosing member Crawford Powell as their chairman. We think this is a progressive move, and Powell should help the board to focus on the authority's important task of economic development.
THUMBS UP: To the South Health District for being recognized as having the third highest rate of immunization in Georgia for 2003. The rate of 91.9 percent was almost 10 percent more than 2002. Health departments in the 10-county district and private providers contributed to the effort.
THUMBS UP: To Capt. Tim Farrell of the local Salvation Army for assisting with relief efforts in Punta Gorda, Fla. Farrell was put in command of a mobile kitchen that will serve 12,000-15,000 meals a day. We're sure the people living in the hurricane-ravaged area appreciate the help, and we're fortunate to have someone like Farrell representing South Georgia in the disaster area.
THUMBS UP: To the Brooks County Ministerial Association for aiding the victims of Hurricane Charley by collecting household items and planning to take a truckload of them there next Thursday. Items such as trash bags, insect repellent, and cleaning items are needed. The Association has a van parked at the Refuge of Hope, two miles west of Quitman on Highway 84, as a dropoff point for donated items. Other sites are at Morven City Hall and Barwick City Hall.
