THUMBS DOWN: To candidates in the Nov. 4 election who have not made sure their signs were removed from public rights-of-way and other locations around town. They have a right to put them up and a responsibility to take them down. Get to it!



THUMBS UP: To the people who work and live in Keaton Beach, Fla., for the support and help they've shown to the families of the four young people from the Lowndes area who have been missing in the Gulf since Nov. 8. Thumbs up to the many individuals from this area who helped the boaters' families through this most difficult time.



THUMBS UP: To the Lowndes High School band, the Georgia Bridgemen, whose members are leaving Sunday morning for New York City to participate in the Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Thumbs up to their parents, teachers and others in the community who supported the effort for the band to have this great opportunity and tremendous honor.



THUMBS UP: To South Georgia Medical Center for winning an award for improving information technology. Errors in preanalytic laboratory specimens have been reduced to zero with the use of the Becton-Dickinson-id system. In turn, this has helped SGMC to meet the 2003 National Patient Safety Goals of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
