South Georgia Regional Library has found a unique way to keep youngsters reading while school’s out for summer. The libraries many area branches are mixing reading with numerous other activities.

With its Once Upon A Time theme, South Georgia Regional Library’s summer programs features a fairy tale costume contest; handing out free tickets to Peach State Summer Theatre’s production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”; showing movies such as “The Lord of the Rings;” hosting a Little Actors Theatre production of “Tin Soldier,” an interpretative dance troupe, and musicians; scavenger hunts, game days, arts and crafts, puzzles, special visitors and more.

Many of these activities have a direct tie-in with reading. The costume contest could introduce youngsters to any number of books on fairy tales and numerous characters. In PSST!’s production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” the beauty Belle is an avid reader of books. Following the movie presentation of “The Lord of the Rings,” youngsters can discover the characters’ further adventures in J.R.R. Tolkien’s series of books.

Youngsters will be surrounded by the thousands of books available to them to borrow and take home through the South Georgia Regional Library system. All these youngsters need to enter the exciting worlds offered in these books is a library card, which is free.
