Despite recent strides made in combating heart disease and stroke, much work remains in researching these two killers and emphasizing preventive medicine.

Those who attend the sixth annual Valdosta Heart and Stroke Gala on Saturday at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center can help with both needs. Funds raised from ticket sales benefit further research and education. Also, this year’s event will highlight the nationwide fight against childhood obesity and increase awareness that heart disease and stroke affect people of all ages. Experts say the best way to fight heart disease and stroke is to stop the risks before they start.

The gala, presented by South Georgia Cardiology, P.C., promises fun with flair. The black-tie event will feature dining, dancing and a live and silent auction. The Fabulous Classics will perform, and the live and silent auction will include trips, artwork and local parties.

Tickets are $100 per person or $900 per table. For information, call the American Heart Association at 247-1550.
