VALDOSTA -- Ware County added to Valdosta High's slow baseball start Saturday, defeating the Wildcats, 8-1, on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational.

Morris Grant threw six innings of three-hit ball to keep Ware County (7-0) unbeaten. Valdosta fell to 1-5.

Grant faced the minimum number of batters for 3 1/3 innings, before allowing an infield hit to B.J. Southers and an Ashley Bonner single to left. Neither scored.

VHS did get a run in the sixth when reserve Jason Crosby singled off Grant, moved to third on Grant's bad pickoff throw and scored on an infield error.

Ware County scored single runs in the first and second, then scored four off VHS starter Austin Bennett in the third.

Grant had a sacrifice fly and the last run scored on Subby Grant's single. Two other runs scored on wild pitchers.

The last two runs scored on a double steal and a wild pitch.

Valdosta hosts Lake City Columbia Tuesday and Tallahassee Leon Wednesday.

n In LaGrange, Lowndes High's second day in the LaGrange Invitational baseball tournament was cancelled because of rain.

The Vikings (2-2) lost both games Friday, and were to play Munford (Tenn.) Saturday in addition to a consolation game.

Pitcher Clay Hamm and catcher Jacob Jarvis were named to the all-tournament team.

Lowndes hosts Brookwood Friday (7:30 p.m.) and South Gwinnett Saturday (1:30 p.m.) at Noel George Field.

n In Valdosta, Madison County (Fla.) defeated Berrien 11-1 Saturday in the final game of the Wildcat Invitational at Valdosta High.

For Madison, Eric Norfleet went 3-for-3, with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI. Chad Smith went 3-for-4, scoring three runs. Bruce Williams was the winning pitcher, holding Berrien to four hits.

For Berrien, Clay Davis went 2-for-3. Tyler Copeland took the loss. Berrien hosts Tift County Tuiesday at 4 p.m.

n In Tallahassee, Fla., Georgia Christian defeated FAMU High 14-4 Saturday.

Cale Nelson earned the win, allowing one hit in five innings. Nelson also went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Derek Broome and Walker Sloan were both 2-for-4. The Generals (1-3) scored in every inning but the second.

n In Valdosta, Cory Nichols pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Lowndes High's JV to a 4-0 victory over Lee County. Nichols struck out six. Jake Summers had two hits and an RBI, while Bryan Sermons and Brandon Waller had RBI doubles.

Lowndes High's ninth graders defeated Lee County 5-3 Saturday. Lee scored three unearned runs in the second inning, but Lowndes scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth. Matt Harper, Josh Key, and Robert Wetherington drove in runs for LHS. Matt Harper and Jon Michael Redding combined to allow Lee just three hits.

LHS hosts Clinch Monday.



College softball

In Spartanburg, S.C., Valdosta State's softball team won twice in the South Carolina-Spartanburg Invitational Saturday.

Angela Lauzon pitched a no-hitter in the first game, and the Blazers defeated Queens 8-0. Lauzon (10-6) struck out three and walked just one.

Later Saturday, VSU scored three times in the sixth to come from behind and defeat Newberry 3-2. In the sixth, RBI doubles by Ashley Thierer, Holly Willis and Linsey Walker scored the runs.

Thierer was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI. Willis was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brooke King (9-5) allowed six hits and two runs for VSU.



Prep golf

In Bainbridge, Lowndes High finished fourth at the Bearcat Invitational. For the Vikings, Eric Griffin and Patrick O'Neal shot a 77, Ryan Parker shot a 78, and Andrew Crook and Colby Harris each shot 81.

Houston Academy (Dothan, Ala.) won the tournament, followed by Colquitt County and Columbus.

Lowndes travels to Tift County Monday.
