VALDOSTA -- A Savannah man wanted for questioning in a Valdosta man's shooting death was arrested Friday morning in Richmond Hill, Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said.

John Randall Perkins, 22, who also faces charges in Savannah, is being held in Richmond Hill. The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office hasn't taken out a murder warrant on Perkins yet because it's waiting on forensics tests, Paulk said.

If Perkins is charged with murder, he's expected to be extradited to Lowndes County because of the more serious charge, Paulk said.

The body of Mario Matias Hernandez, 23, was found at 11 p.m. Thursday about two-tenths of a mile on Black Road. Hernandez had been shot multiple times with a .22-caliber handgun, Paulk said.

According to reports, Perkins is wanted in connection with a shooting of a cab driver that occurred Wednesday in Savannah. The cab driver also was shot with a .22-caliber handgun.

Perkins also was implicated in a series of home invasions and the shooting of an elderly woman with a high-powered pellet gun, Paulk said.

Savannah police, knowing Perkins has an aunt who lives in Valdosta, notified Lowndes deputies to be on the lookout for him. The aunt lives on South Patterson Street in close proximity to an Hispanic church. The aunt told Lowndes County investigators that Perkins went walking from her house at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Hernandez was at the church Thursday night and left about 9:30 p.m. Lowndes County investigators believe Perkins either caught a ride with Hernandez or held a gun on the man, Paulk said.

About 8 a.m. Friday, Perkins was spotted driving Hernandez's truck near Richmond Hill, which is west of Savannah. Following a chase, Perkins was arrested, Paulk said.

A ballistics test is being run on the gun that was in Perkins' possession when he was caught, Paulk said.
