VALDOSTA — Georgia Theatre Xtreme premium format is set to open for the release of “Captain Marvel."

GTX opens Thursday, March 7.

The GTX is a more than 70-foot-by-roughly-40-foot screen with 43 speakers, said Jim Cody, general manager of Valdosta Stadium Cinemas. Included in the 43 speakers are six subwoofers and 20 speakers mounted around the theatre to create an immersive sound experience.

“We have Dolby Atmos sound which is totally immersive sound; it is the best movie-going experience you can get,” said Rob Styn, district manager for Georgia Theatre Company.

Along with a larger screen, the new theatre space includes 262 reclining seats, Cody said. The seats have automated features allowing guests to recline seats and extend a footrest with the touch of a few buttons.

When purchasing tickets for the GTX, guests will be able to choose the specific seats they would like to sit in for the film.

Valdosta Stadium Cinemas can better accommodate the needs of the community with the new theater, the managers said.

“This auditorium means for the community that they don’t have to go out of town for a large premium format anymore; we have it available right here,” Styn said.

Cody said the new theatre experience is ideal for seeing the latest blockbusters.

“Marvel movies are perfect for this. Any action movies with special effects would be a good fit for this theatre,” Cody said.

According to Valdosta Stadium Cinemas' website, the average price to purchase a GTX ticket is around $15. The matinee price is around $12.

With the completion of the new large-screen format, Valdosta Stadium Cinemas has started a new project in its front lobby.

There is currently a dust wall taking up most of the space in the theatre’s lobby. Behind the wall, Cody said the construction team is working to create a self-serve focused concession stand.

“It’ll be much more efficient for customers, much quicker,” Cody said. “It’ll allow us to expand the menu if we wanted to, but we don’t have any specific plans on that.”

The new construction is planned to be completed around summer, but Cody said there isn’t a definite timeline yet. In the meantime, all of the theatre amenities will be available.

The new GTX theatre opens with “Captain Marvel” 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, March 7. Starting Friday, March 8, the new GTX theatre will have movie times available all throughout the day.
