PERRY -- Lowndes High's wrestling duo of David Bertsch and Matt Godwin battled their way to individual state wrestling championships Saturday night.
Bertsch won the 125-pound class while Godwin won the 145-pound class at the Class AAAAA event which was held Friday and Saturday at the agricenter arena.
Meanwhile, Valdosta High used four wrestlers who won consolation matches to claim an eighth-place team finish. VHS finished one-half point ahead of Sprayberry for the position, 80.5 points to 80. Lowndes finished 12th with 67 points.
Collins Hill edged McEachern, 187.5 to 181.5, to win the team title.
Bertsch won his two matches Saturday by decision, defeating a South Gwinnett wrestler, 10-4, and a Collins Hill wrestler, 9-3, in the finals. Bertsch is a four-time Region 1 champion.
Godwin's two championship matches were much closer. He won his semifinal match, 3-1, over a Collins Hill wrestler, then defeated an East Coweta wrestler, 4-2 in overtime. Godwin is a two-time Region 1 champion.
Four Valdosta High wrestlers advanced to place in the consolation bracker earlier in the day Saturday.
Daniel Daugherty (171) and Jamal Scott (140) won their third-place matches.
After Daugherty lost by a 6-4 decision in the semifinals, he came back to win two matches, a 7-0 decision over a Milton wrestler and a 5-3 decision over a South Gwinett wrestler.
Scott followed the same path. After losing his semifinal match by a major decision (14-5) to an Eagles' Landing wrestler, he defeated wrestlers from Walton (8-6) and Lassiter (4-1).
Terrio Thomas (189) and David Smothers (130) came through the consolation bracket, winning two of three matches each, to finish fifth.
Thomas won his fifth-place match by default over a Cherokee wrestler, while Smothers defeated a North Cobb wrestler, 6-4, for his fifth-place finish.
Lowndes High's Justin Smith (215) also finished fifth, defeating a McEachern wrestler, 5-4. Smith had lost twice earlier in the day, including a pin in the semifinal round.
