THUMBS UP: To Valdosta State University students who renew the intellectual vitality of this community with each new semester. Classes started this week, and we wish everyone a great school year. The community thanks them for choosing VSU and making it their temporary home. We urge them to consider making their lives here after graduation.

THUMBS DOWN: To CNN and CBS for paying sources for access to videotapes that depict al-Qaida poison gas experiments. It seems like a bad idea all around, even if the end result is new and important knowledge. In addition of having to defend allegations it has now funded possible terrorists, the payments further hurt the credibility of legitimate media in the mind of the general public. Tabloids are always paying for someone's story or photos. Newspapers never do, and yet the public doesn't always make distinctions.

THUMBS UP: To the district attorney in Augusta who decided not to charge a 90-year-old doctor who fatally shot an intruder in his home. Dr. Gilbert L. Klemann was acting in self defense when he shot George Epperly last Wednesday just after Epperly pushed him down inside his house. "Dr. Klemann was well within his rights under the law in using deadly force to kill the burglar," District Attorney Danny Craig said. Perhaps other potential burglars will think twice about entering someone's home, knowing that even a 90-year-old is capable of defending himself.

THUMBS UP: To all who voted in Tuesday's primary with a reminder that a few races weren't decided then and resulted in runoff races Sept. 10. Republicans choosing a candidate for lieutenant governor will need to decide between former state Sen. Mike Beatty and former state Rep. Steve Stancil. Democrats must again vote for school superintendent, with both Barbara Christmas and Joseph Martin in the runoff. A final list of races won't be known until next week when certified election results are given to the Secretary of State's office. We urge voters to cast their final choices on Sept. 10.
