THUMBS UP: to our local veterans and to the people who attended Veterans Day services or took the time to thank a veteran or active military personnel. The sacrifices of our nation's veterans, living and dead, should never be forgotten neither in peace nor in times of conflict.



THUMBS DOWN: to the University of Georgia for its decision not to inform parents when students violate alcohol and drug policies. UGA administrators have put a final decision on hold due to pressure from campus groups concerned with students rights to privacy. While some students pay their way through school, many others are bankrolled by their parents, and the parents should know when their child has violated policies concerning alcohol and drugs.



THUMBS UP: to area groups and individuals who give their time, talents and energies to local school students while instilling in youngsters a sense of civic duty. Lately, there have been several projects that have reached out to local youths while the students have returned something to their community.



THUMBS DOWN: to the seemingly never-ending rash of celebrities whose lifestyle choices get them in trouble with the law. From sports stars to singers to actors, some celebrities seem to be photographed more often in police mugshots than by paparazzi. Though no celebrity signs a guarantee to become a role model upon becoming famous, celebrities should realize they serve as role models to millions of people, especially youngsters. Of course, maybe Americans should look to themselves too when it comes to the people we popularize.
