Aquariums have always attracted the interest of young and old alike, but who's ever heard of a riverquarium?
The people of Albany have. Their city is the home to the one-of-a-kind Flint RiverQuarium, a 22 foot deep, 175,000 gallon freshwater aquarium that houses scores of fish, reptiles, amphibians and plants native to the region. This innovative idea was designed by world-renowned architect, Antoine Predock and the exhibition firm of Lyons/Saremba.
The Flint RiverQuarium gives guests a front row view of the blue hole spring, a unique geological feature that connects an above-ground river to a mystifing world of water under the Earth's surface.
The attraction also includes interactive exhibits like Discovery Caverns and the Adventure Center, a gift store, and the Imagination Theater, a larger-than-life theater featuring nature films projected onto a screen three stories high and four stories wide. The Imagination Theater is currently showing "Journey into Amazing Caves." The Flint RiverQuarium is also offering diver shows every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Unlike theme parks, the Flint RiverQuarium is open everyday of the year, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hours of operation are currently noon until 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sat. and 1p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sun. Cost is $14 for adults, $12.50 for seniors, and $10 for youth and this price includes admittance to the riverquarium and the theater.
Special hours and rates are available for school groups and members. Party packages for birthdays, weddings, and more are also available.
