An electric wheelchair and a case of beer lie near the roadway near the 1000 block of East Park Avenue Wednesday morning following an accident.

A man was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after he collided with a vehicle while trying to carry a case of beer across a busy five-lane road in a motorized wheelchair.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., Valdosta police responded to a collision involving a white Kia SUV and an individual on a motorized wheelchair on East Park Avenue in front of Valdosta Fire Station Number Two.

The driver of the SUV, Ivan Tucker, said he was turning left onto East Park Avenue when he inadvertently hit the man in the wheelchair, knocking the chair onto its side with the man still buckled into the chair.

“He was coming across the street from the fire station with a beer in his hand. He had one in his hand, but I don’t know if he was drinking,” said Tucker. “I saw him coming, but I thought he was going to stop. I was looking both ways.”

The victim was visibly responsive when EMS personnel transferred him to an ambulance. Blood could be seen in the roadway along with a light, cigarette and a can of beer. The wheelchair appeared slightly damaged and had been moved out of the road along with the case of beer when police arrived.

A police report on this incident, which would include the name of the man in the wheelchair, was not available Wednesday evening.
