QUITMAN -- She finds comfort on the tennis court. His home away from home is a baseball field.
But Parrish Counts and Jordan Hancock have one thing in common. Both were selected to represent Brooks County High School in the 2003 Wendy's High School Heisman Program. "I was truly surprised by my nomination," said Counts, the 18-year-old daughter of John and Barbara Daniel. "My mom was so excited she called everyone. It was definitely something for us all to be happy about."
At school, she serves as secretary of the Student Council and editor of the Yearbook and is a member of SAGE, an organization for future teachers.
"I want to teach eighth-grade mathematics," Counts said. "I plan to attend Valdosta State University."
Besides spending time on the tennis court, she volunteers during the summer months at a nursing home in Pennsylvania, where her sister lives. She also works as an after-school tutor at Brooks County Middle School.
Hancock, 17, plans to attend the University of Florida after graduation and dreams of becoming an anesthesiologist.
"I was kind of surprised when I was nominated," said the son of Chris and Patty Hancock. "There are a lot of guys out here who do a lot more and were also worthy. It was an honor."
Hancock plays pitcher and first baseman on Brooks County High School's baseball team.
"I am thinking about joining the basketball team for the first time this winter," he said.
Hancock is a member of Student Council, Future Farmers of America, and Math Team, and serves as president of the Future Business Leaders of America. He volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Brooks County and works as an after-school tutor at North Brooks Elementary School. The Wendy's High School Heisman Program honors the nation's top high school seniors who best exemplify a supreme "scholar-citizen-athlete."
Principals from approximately 24,000 high schools nationwide were invited to nominate one male and one female student for the Wendy's High School Heisman Program.
