QUITMAN -- The South Georgia Fine Arts Coalition recently named Valdosta State University Assistant Professor Michael Schmidt the April Artist of the Month. A reception will occur about 7 p.m. Thursday. The public is welcome to attend.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, Schmidt works in ceramics, something, according to a press release, he discovered while in college. He went on to earn a bachelor's of fine arts.

"It didn't take long for me to realize the potential, and magical, qualities of clay," he said. "I was hooked."

Schmidt has taught at Endinboro University and the Erie Art Museum, and received his Master's of Fine Arts from Endinboro University in Pennsylvania in 2001, where he started making figurative sculptures.

"Michael is an extreme artist with a techno touch," gallery owner Cynthia Carmichael said.

Schmidt has been in several art shows, including the Valdosta State University Faculty Exhibition, The Clay Cup VIII, The Soda National Competition and the Endinboro Annual Student Juried Exhibition, where he was awarded the best of graduate work.
