VALDOSTA — The Hahira-Lowndes County Community Outreach Development Corporation recently announced plans to hold a Cotillion Debutante Ball.

During the organization’s recent Get Acquainted Tea, cotillion committee members met with potential debutantes and their parents and provided information about the ball. Committee member Jamie Hill also shared her experience as a 2000 debutante.

The ball is to be held on June 5, 2010, and will include junior and senior high school girls from Valdosta, as well as Lowndes, Brooks, Cook, Lanier, Echols, and Berrien counties. The girls must have “B” averages, good moral character and be involved in the community. Girls who use drugs or alcohol or who have ever been pregnant are not allowed to participate.

“The purpose is to present our finest young ladies — academically, morally and socially — to society,” said Estell Rose, committee chair. “We also hope to provide positive reinforcement to assist them as they embark upon womanhood.” During the months leading up to the ball, the debutantes and their escorts will participate in various character-building workshops and activities. On the night of the ball, awards will be presented to those who excelled in the workshops. The theme for the inaugural cotillion is “Ladies of the 21st Century.” The cotillion committee is comprised of several educators, business owners, professionals and officials in the community.
