Verlie H. Copeland
VALDOSTA -- Verlie H. Copeland, 74, of Valdosta, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in the South Georgia Medical Center. Born on Feb. 28, 1928, in Berrien County, Mrs. Copeland was a faithful Baptist and nursing aide. She was preceded in death by her mother, Molly Harris; two brothers, M. L. Harris and Buddy Harris; a sister, Frances Eady; three children, Samuel Smith, III, Tony Copeland, and Gloria Jean Davis. She leaves to lament her passing six loving children, Sharon Burks, Vince Copeland, Ricky Copeland, and Harold Copeland (Willie Mae), all of Valdosta, Patricia Jones (Frazier) of Miami, Fla., and Debra Jones (Albert) of Fyetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Gerdine Berry of Valdosta, and Mrs. Luvina Tomlin of Miami, Fla.; a loving brother, Mr. Willie Harris of Valdosta. She also leaves to mourn her cherished memories 33 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends Anita, Becky, and Lavarne. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Forrest Church of Christ, 1515 North Forrest Street. Brother Leroy Butler, Jr., is the minister. Brother Andre Norwood will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral time. -- Scott and Roberts Mortuary, Inc.
LAKELAND -- Grace Grant, 99, of Lakeland, passed away Saturday night, Nov. 2, 2002, in the Lakeland Villa Convalescent Center after a brief illness. She was born in London, Ky., and had lived in Lakeland for the past 25 years. She was Baptist by faith. Survivors include two sons, Jack Fanning of Lakeland and Therald Fanning of Sacaremento, Calif.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial following in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. -- Music Funeral Services, Inc.
Pearl Doss Smith
SYCAMORE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Doss Smith, 81, of Sycamore will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Sycamore Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Inaha Baptist Church Cemetery in Turner County. Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Tift Regional Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Turner County, she was the daughter of the late William Ernest and Willa Bowen Doss. A longtime resident of Sycamore, she was a member of the Sycamore Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a retired secretary and substitute school teacher. Mrs. Smith was involved in many civic and community activities. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by one son, John Allen Smith, Jr. Survivors include her husband, John A. Smith Sr., of Sycamore; a daughter and son-in-law, Ramona S. and Joe McNair of Tifton; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Mona and Keith Cawley of Tift County; grandsons, Allien McNair of Rome; John A. "Jake" Smith, III, of Savannah, and Sam Smith of Tifton; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Trent Cawley of Tift County. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, please make donations to the Sycamore Baptist Church, Hospice of Tift Area, or Bradley-Goss Scholarship Fund in care of Ashburn First United Methodist Church. -- Perry Funeral Chapel, Inc.

Jack Forrest Wise, 90, of Hahira, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Carson McLane Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn City Cemetery in Adel. -- Carson McLane Funeral Home.
