Golla Bell Coody Barrett

Golla Bell Coody Barrett, 90, of Valdosta died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born on May 3, 1912, to the late Frank and Ella Adams Coody and was a lifelong resident of Lowndes County. Mrs. Barrett was a member of the Mount Zion Methodist Church. She taught at Lomax school for 10 years and worked for Dr. David Branch for 20 years. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, William and Judy Barrett, James Barrett; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Marcell and Earl Gaskin, Virginia and Foster Fletcher, Shirley Lieupo and Alice Rickman, all of Valdosta; 23 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Corthie Wisenbaker, Doris Lott. She was preceded in death by her husband, James William Barrett Sr., and a daughter, Ethel Perdue; two brothers, Lonnie Coody, Will Coody; and two sisters, Lela Mae Taylor and Bertie Mae Coldwell. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Mount Zion Methodist Church with Pastor Bill Cotterill and Rev. Maxine Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery. Steven Warren Battles

VALDOSTA -- Steven Warren Battles, 43, Valdosta passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born on Jan. 24, 1959, in Anniston, Ala. Mr. Battles owner of Visual Concepts, was a graduate of Donoho School, held a B.A. degree in Accounting from Birmingham Southern and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was also a member of Forrest Park Church of Christ, Valdosta. He is survived by his parents, Dr. William and Janice Warren Battles of Valdosta; brother and sister-in-law, William Melvin and Denise Battles of Douglasville, Ga.; grandparents, Jess and Lou Warren Cotney, Childersburg, Ala.; a special foster brother, Tam Huynh, Ozark, Ala.; aunts and uncles Ron and Evelyn Warren, Huntsville, Ala., Tommy and Laraine Warren, Birmingham, Ala., Judge Larry Warren, Anniston, Ala., Brenda Warren Kemp, Oxford, Ala., Janice and Gerald Powell, Jacksonville, Ala., Mike and Carolyn Battles, Anniston, Ala., Kathi and Dalton Pitchford, Birmingham, Ala. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Alta Warren and W.M. and Pearl Battles. Lawrence Copeland

VALDOSTA -- Bro. Lawrence Copeland, 50, of Valdosta the third child of the late Mr. Frank Copeland and Doris Copeland, was born June 11, 1952, in Lowndes County. He attended the public school in Lowndes County and graduated from Lowndes High School in 1970. He served three years in the U.S. Army and was medically discharged as a Sgt. E4. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Frank Copeland, Sr. and his sister Narva Jean Copeland Seay. Bro. Copeland was a long time member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on the Usher Board. Bro. Copeland had a quiet and caring spirit. His passion was tending to his livestock and farming. He was a good friend and neighbor and will truly be missed by all. Bro. Lawrence entered the arms of his Savior on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at South Georgia Medical Center. Ruth Virginia Kemp

VALDOSTA -- Ruth Virginia Kemp, 66, of Valdosta died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. She was born on Sept. 18, 1936, to the late Fred and Mary Lee Jackson. Mrs. Kemp was a retired seamstress and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a good and caring person.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Glenn Williams of Atlanta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Kemp, Randy and Melony Kemp, all of Valdosta, Ryan and Missy Kemp of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren, Candice Kemp, Travis Kemp, Blake Kemp, Tyler Kemp, all of Valdosta and Ryan Kemp of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one great- granddaughter, Chariott Kemp of Valdosta; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and Raymond Fletcher of Valdosta, Nancy Christie of Atlanta, Esther and Randall Barwick of Albany; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Jean Jackson of Griffin, Benny and Jean Jackson of Pinetta, Fla., and Fred and Jan Jackson of Gastonia, S.C.; and a special friend, Clora Mae Fussell of Valdosta.
