VALDOSTA -- A minor explosion occurred at the ADM Processing Plant located at 1841 Clay Road Monday evening, but no injuries were reported, according to officials with the Valdosta Fire Department.
Three fire trucks, a ladder truck and command vehicle were on site, but only remained for about an hour after the 8:30 p.m. incident.
Personnel at the plant were monitoring gauges in an unidentified building when an explosion reportedly took place, Capt. Ed Mitchell, Valdosta Fire Department, said. One fire truck remained on site Monday evening only as a precautionary measure, Mitchell said.
Personnel with ADM were unable to make any comments about the incident; however, one truck driver, who didn't want to give his name, had arrived and was preparing to empty his load into a tank when he heard and witnessed the occurrence. He heard a "big boom and saw a big ball of fire," he said.
A short time after the explosion, a representative from the plant came up to him and told him he would have to pull his truck outside the gate, the driver said.
The Archer Daniels Midland company is a world leader in agricultural processing, according to its Web site. The company processes soybeans, corn, wheat and cocoa.
