VALDOSTA -- A Valdosta man faces several charges including murder in connection with the Sunday morning death of a local man.
Alvin Nelson, 53, 1103 Lamar St., is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with the death of James Rowe Jr., 30, 6509 Franklinville Road, Hahira.
Commander Steve Heaton of the Valdosta Police Department said officers were dispatched at about 12:30 a.m. to the 100 block of East Martin Luther King Boulevard. They discovered Rowe, who had been shot once in the chest.
Charles Exum, Lowndes County coroner, said the body was sent to the Moultrie Crime Lab where the official cause of death will be determined.
Heaton said the officers were able to determine that Nelson and Rowe had been in an altercation when Rowe was allegedly shot by Nelson. Rowe was transported to South Georgia Medical Center.
"Because of the assistance from witnesses, Nelson was arrested a short time later and has been charged with the listed offenses," Heaton said. "Additional charges may be added later."
Nelson is being held in the Lowndes County Jail.
