VALDOSTA -- Lowndes High played lights-out soccer Tuesday, even before the pitch went pitch black at Martin Stadium.
A 15-minute delay due to a power surge was the only thing that slowed down Lowndes in its Region 1-AAAAA doubleheader against Tift County. LHS won both games by a score of 4-0.
In the nightcap, the Vikings (2-1, 2-0) got on the board early thanks to a tremendous play by Kyle Baxter. The junior stole the ball at midfield, weaved through and around a trio of Tift County defenders before planting the ball in the back corner of the net.
"That was a great individual effort," said Lowndes coach Mike Wessner. "He beat a couple of guys off the dribble, looked up and saw an opportunity."
Shortly thereafter, the field lights went dark.
"I was hoping that wasn't going to take away our momentum," Wessner. "We told them that it was our field and to make sure to claim it."
No problem coach. Baxter added two more goals for a hat trick after an Eric Hughes goal made it 2-0. Senior goalkeeper Chris Slaughter needed only five saves for the shutout.

The Vikettes had a 1-0 lead but little momentum at intermission. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Lowndes had all the momentum it needed, not to mention a three-goal advantage.
Freshman Samantha McCoy made it 2-0 when she sent a rebound into an open net 10 minutes into the period. Minutes later, junior Brittany Speece collected a brilliant pass from Ashley Elam and sent it into the left corner for a 3-0 advantage.
"I'm not really used to playing with Brittany, but she just rushed full speed toward the net and I got it to her," said Elam, a sophomore.
"We played better in the second half," said Lowndes coach Bob Irwin. "We passed it well and created open shots."
Anna Murray added the other two goals on penalty kicks for Lowndes (2-1, 2-0), while Sarah Lippincott stopped four shots for the Vikettes.
Haley Brooks made nine saves for Tift County.
Lowndes travels to Columbus this Friday to play in a tournament at Hardaway High.
