TIFTON -- The Lowndes High Vikettes (18-4, 7-1) took care of business early after nearly being upset in the first meeting, earning the gratitude of head coach and laryngitis sufferer Laine Craven for a 63-40 win over Tift County.

"We finally decided to have a complete game," said Craven. "I told them they better play hard because I couldn't yell."

Lowndes has won three straight following an upset loss at Colquitt County. And with the Lady Packers' 36-27 loss to Coffee High on Tuesday, the Vikettes now lead the region by a half-game.

Lowndes held Tift County (6-13, 2-7) to just 12 points in the first half before cranking up its inside game to blow the contest open. Forward Monique Ellis finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Currie Powers added 15 points.

But Craven was just as happy with the effort of guards Candice Close and Brandy Holsendolph (nine points apiece).

"We were really strong with our inside game, and when they tried to stop that our guards took over," Craven said.

Shelly Baxter, Shanice Dawson and Shaday Mims scored six points apiece for the Lady Devils, who play their last home game Friday against Fitzgerald.
