Inmate dies in Valdosta State Prison

Dominique Bohannon Hurt

VALDOSTA — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate Sunday at Valdosta State Prison.

Dominique Bohannon Hurt, 33, was found unresponsive in his cell, said Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson.

"They did CPR immediately and called an ambulance," he said, "and CPR was performed all the way to (South Georgia Medical Center.)"

Hurt was pronounced dead at 1:20 p.m. at the hospital, Watson said. There was no sign of trauma, he said.

Hurt's body is being kept in the Valdosta-Lowndes County Regional Crime Lab until it can be shipped to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Macon for an autopsy, Watson said.

Hurt had been at Valdosta State Prison for about three months after being transferred there from a Telfair facility, Watson said.

The Georgia Department of Corrections website shows Hurt was serving an eight-year sentence for failing to register as a sex offender in Baldwin County. The same website shows previous convictions for statutory rape and credit card fraud.

Hurt is the third inmate to die at Valdosta State Prison this year. In February, inmates Cody Vestal, 37, and Richard Strickland, 31, died from a fire in their prison cell.

Terry Richards is senior reporter at The Valdosta Daily Times.
