VALDOSTA -- Sam Hogan did something Saturday no else at Valdosta Country Club has done this weekend. It put him 18 holes closer to something he's already done this summer.
Hogan shot a tournament-best one-under 71 to take a four-shot lead after the second round of the Jack Oliver Invitational golf tournament at VCC.
Hogan will tee off at 1:20 p.m. for today's final round. The leaders will play the Plantation and Bottom Nines.
Hogan is at 3-over 147 for 36 holes. While he's five shots better than any of the golfers in the championship flight's A Division, he's four shots ahead of B Division leader Turner Armstrong (77-74=151).
"I just tried to stay focused," said Hogan, who watched as most of the golfers battled windy conditions and fast greens for a second day. "I thought if somebody shot a good number, maybe they moved up.
"I just didn't realize it would be me."
Hogan, who won the Valdosta Open earlier this summer, finished fast. He shot a 1-under 35 on his back nine (Bellemeade), overcoming a double-bogey 7 on No. 1 with three birdies.
Hogan will play today with Freddy Steedley (152) and first-round co-leader Curt Daniels (153) in today's final group. Steedley shot his second 76, while Daniels had a 78.
Also at 153 is first-round co-leader Blake Decesare (75-78) and Joe Griffin (76-77). Walter Peacock (76-78) is at 154.
Armstrong leads the Championship Flight's B Division by a shot over Danny Daniels (77-75=152). Both Armstrong and C Division leader Billy Sullivan (83-74=157) shot 74s on Saturday.
Sullivan leads Al Armstrong (159) by two shots. In D Division, Don Plageman (84-78=162) has a five-shot lead over John Polo and Carl Wade (each at 167).
The other golfers are scored using the Stableford system. Those leaders include:
First flight, Donny Traylor (plus-3); second flight, Byron Courson (plus-3); third flight, James McMurtry (plus-3); fourth flight, Kevin Barker (plus-8); fifth flight, Dick Rockey (plus-8); sixth flight, Paul Long (plus-6); seventh flight, Tim Harris (plus-9); eighth flight, Wayne Rambo (plus-9).
