The Valdosta City School System's 2005 Spelling Bee was held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the transportation department. The event was sponsored by the Georgia Association of Educators and the Atlanta Daily World.

Twelve students from two elementary schools and two middle schools were eligible to participate in the systemwide spelling bee.

After 12 rounds of words, Dillon Hanson won the final round of the competition by correctly spelling "siege" and "malice." A seventh-grade student at Valdosta Middle School, he will represent the Valdosta City School System at the district spelling bee to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, in Moultrie.

First runner-up was Jade Matthews, a seventh-grader at J.L. Newbern Middle School. The second runner-up was Cameron Venus of Valdosta Middle School. Third runner-up was Jasmine Powell of Southeast Elementary School.

Other systemwide participants were Asa Balloon and Conseula Woodard from Southeast Elementary School; Tyler Darlington, Derreck Pierce, and Damien Williams from West Gordon Elementary School; Zachary Gibson from Valdosta Middle School; and Bobby Bond and Rashawn Pettiford from J.L. Newbern Middle School.
