VALDOSTA — Mayor Pro Tem John Eunice directed a brief Valdosta City Council meeting Thursday night.

The at-large representative sat in for Mayor John Fretti who was absent. John Robinson addressed the council regarding the Valdosta Small Emerging Business program.

He said the program is good for the city but asked if businesses located outside the city limits would be allowed to participate in the program. If not, he requested that the city amend the ordinance regarding VSEB to make it possible.

Robinson said that black people in the community do not seem to get the information they need regarding issues being addressed by council and the City of Valdosta.

He requested that the city use radio stations and a newspaper other than The Valdosta Daily Times to get information out to the public.

City Manager Larry Hanson said the VSEB program is for any business in the Valdosta Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes businesses outside the Valdosta city limits. Barthaniel Werts then asked council to address the issue of flooding in the area of Forrest and Troup streets.

Werts, who lives on the corner of Forrest and Troup, said the water running down the road is encroaching on his yard, rather than emptying into the street drains.

Hanson directed Werts to discuss his problem with Henry Hicks, the utilities director, to resolve the issue.

Hanson said that Lowndes County Emergency Management reported that the city has received four inches of rain in the last 15 hours and the storm-water runoff system seems to be holding up remarkably well.
