VALDOSTA -- The Valdosta City Council will vote again tonight on who will be appointed to the Valdosta Lowndes Industrial Authority.
The Council has voted for Gary Minchew twice in two meetings, and Lowndes County Commissioners maintain their choice of Jerry Jennett.
At the end of the Council's June 24 meeting, the Council decided to go back to the county and have a meeting to decide on the person who will fill the Industrial Authority's seat.
City Manager Larry Hanson and County Manager Joe Pritchard met July 1 to discuss various subjects, but the subject of the joint appointment was also brought up. One of the recommendations the managers came up with for this appointment and for future ones was to make choices on a rotating basis. One entity would make the decision, and the other entity would confirm the first's choice.
The Council could decide to approve this recommendation tonight.
The Council will also hear a request to rezone 5.17 acres from Community Commercial to Highway Commercial for speculative commercial development. The subject property is located in the Food Lion Shopping Center off the northeast corner of the intersection of Inner Perimeter Road and North Oak Street Extension.
Valdosta Police Chief Frank Simons asked the Council to apply for a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant. The city is eligible for $27,353, but the city must make a cash match of $3,040.
Valdosta Police Department must apply jointly with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department for the grant. Simons said he had been talking to Capt. J.D. Yeager with the Sheriff's Department and with Pritchard about the grant.
Asked by Councilman Sonny Vickers what he intended to do with the funds, Simons said he was going to add it to other grant money to improve technology when writing, printing and recording tickets.
The Council will meet in the Council Chambers in City Hall off Lee Street at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
