Slooooooooooooooow down. That is the key advice motorists in South Georgia must heed today if wintry weather arrived last night, as predicted.

There is nothing more important than simply reducing your speed even if you don't think the conditions are bad.

Drivers who have spent little time in more wintry parts of the country are reminded that slick conditions -- ice, snow or sleet -- reduce tire traction significantly. You cannot drive the speed limit and stop on time or turn.

At the same time, don't brake constantly. You'll skid, lose traction, or come to a stop and be unable to move forward again if it's icy. The key is to move steadily and slowly forward. Use a manual transmission to slow down, rather than brake.

We urge extra caution on roads such as Bemiss, which can be treacherous under the best of conditions.

And, of course, don't forget to use your seat belt and restrain small children in proper seats.
