VALDOSTA -- David Demerssemen, 49, a candidate for the Lowndes County Board of Assessors, was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after police and emergency personnel were called to his home.
Demerssemen of 2836 Bud McKey Circle, was subdued by police after they arrived at the residence at about 8:30 a.m., where they discovered him with a self-inflicted knife wound to the neck, said Lt. Brian Childress, public information officer with Valdosta Police Department. He was taken to South Georgia Medical Center, where he was admitted.
Demerssemen won the Post 1 Republican nomination in the July 20 primary election by acclamation, but still received 3,279 votes. A family member contacted Thursday said he would be withdrawing from the Nov. 2 election where he would have faced incumbent Earl Wetherington, a Democrat.
