VALDOSTA -- Valdosta Technical College's Kathy Berger of Lakeland was honored with the first Servant's Heart award recently at the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society's meeting in Macon.

The award is a Georgia Citizenship award to be given annually.

Berger enrolled at Valdosta Technical College in January 2002 and graduated from the Accounting program with a perfect grade point average one year later. She is currently pursuing a diploma in business office technology.

Berger has been active in Phi Beta Lambda -- treasurer in 2002 and president in 2003 -- the Student Government Association -- vice president in 2002-03 -- and the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society, serving as president during the 2002-03 school year.

Berger was awarded the Georgia Occupation Award of Leadership, first place in accounting principles at the 2002 District Phi Beta Lambda competition, and first place in Emerging Business Issues at the 2003 Phi Beta Lambda state competition. She was named Who's Who in Georgia Phi Beta Lambda and Student of the Month at Valdosta Tech in June.

The 2002 executive committee of the national society established the Servant's Heart award to honor a member for service to his or her community.
