ADEL — An Adel police officer responding to an armed robbery call Saturday was shot and a suspect arrested, according to authorities.

At 11:18 p.m., Adel police received a 911 call about an armed robbery at Adel Food Mart, 615 N. Hutchinson Ave., according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Officer Joshua Weeks encountered the suspect as he left the store, the GBI said. The suspect shot at Weeks, who received a non-life-threatening wound to the temple, according to the statement. The officer also fired his weapon, the GBI said.

The suspect fled but was arrested a short time later by Adel police and deputies from Cook and Lowndes County, the statement said. The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office sent tracking dogs to help with the search, and it was the dogs that located the suspect, said Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk.

The GBI identified the suspect as Jermaine Alexander Davis, 44. Davis was taken to the Cook County Jail.

Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to contact the Adel Police Department (229-896-2224, Ext., 1308) or the GBI's Douglas Office (912-389-4103).

The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Cook County District Attorney's Office for review, the statement said.
