VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University Music continues its series of free, public concerts and recitals this week.
— Faculty Jazz Combo, 7:30 p.m. today, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood. Part of the music department’s Faculty Recital Series, this performance includes VSU Music members Joren Cain, saxophone; Kenneth Kirk, trumpet; Doug Farwell, trombone; David Springfield, piano; Tod Leavitt, bass; Paul Campiglia, drums.
— Valdosta Symphony Orchestra Honors Recital, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood. Part of the student recital series, this concert features students selected for performance by the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra — matched with VSU Music faculty accompaniment. Vincent Rhodes on piano, accompanied by Larry Scully, piano, on Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2 in C Minor Moderato. Nancy Davis on marimba, accompanied by Lyle Indergaard, piano, on Kurka’s Concerto for Marimba: Allegro. Andrew Nelson on trombone, accompanied by Valerie Holton, piano, on Larsson’s Concertina for Trombone: Aria — Andante sostenuto, Finale — Allegro giocoso. Bryan Garris on flute, accompanied by Valerie Holton, piano, on Mozart’s Concerto No. 2 in D Major: Adagio ma non troppo, Tondeau — Tempo di Menuetto. And the 2010 Concerto Competition winner: Tyler Walker on piano, accompanied by Lyle Indergaard, on Mozart’s Concerto No. 23 in A Major: Allegro. Walker will also perform with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra’s concert, March 27.
— Mezzo-soprano Mikal B. Tecle, 3 p.m. Sunday, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood. Part of the Student Recital Series, Tecle is accompanied by Brittany Godwin, soprano, and Valerie Holton, piano, performing the music of Manuel Penella, Robert Schumann, Ned Rorem, W.A. Mozart, Francesco Paolo Tosti. “This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the bachelor of music with a major in music education degree,” according to VSU Music. Tecle is a student of Dr. Tamara Hardesty.
