I'm hoping that everyone is observing the Memorial Day holiday in the way it was intended -- honoring those who gave all in service to the country. There are several events locally to choose from, including an observance Monday at the Hahira Courthouse at 11 a.m. as well as one in Valdosta at Sunset Hill Cemetery at 10 a.m., with local elected officials presiding.

The holiday is also a good time to catch up on all of those chores you've been putting off, spending time relaxing with friends and family -- and shopping the sales at local stores.

Business Roundup

If you've driven down Norman Drive lately, you've seen the Brewster's Ice Cream store coming along and a gaping hole where Old America used to be. Best Buy hasn't wasted any time and should be done with the renovation/rebuild in mid-summer.

Loco's Deli is finally opening this week, offering an eclectic menu in a relaxed atmosphere.

Also re-opening this week is Sojourner's downtown. Much of the menu will stay the same, with some additions such as fresh baked goods every morning.

I also understand that there is a new cafe coming downtown, next to the Voodoo Lounge.

Despite rumors to the contrary, the charming smocking store in Hahira, Sew Blessed, is not closing but is in fact expanding. The store is adding both space and a line of sewing machines, in addition to the fabric selection, patterns and classes offered for smockers and sewers.

There is a new pawn shop on St. Augustine, Southland Pawn, which seems like it appeared overnight almost. And there is a sign on Bemiss Road in the same strip with Subway and TJ's Ice Cream that says Mambo Cuban Restaurant, opening soon.

No big announcements this week, although my week wouldn't be complete without yet another Olive Garden rumor. Trust me, if they ever sign a deal for land in this town, it will be on the front page. And if Carabba's beats them to it, well, that'll make the front as well.

I hear lots of exciting things are in the works, and as always, if you know something I need to know, call me.
