Marlana Jones, a six-year member of the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta, was named 2010 Youth of the Year.
Jones will be in Atlanta March 25-27 competing for the State Youth of the Year title. She is among hundreds of local Youth of the Year winners across the country recognized by Boys and Girls Clubs of America for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Jones was born in Valdosta and is the daughter of Juliette Jones. She is a standout student at Valdosta High School, where she is involved in First Federal Savings Student Advisory Board, S.M.I.L.E. Club (Student Mentoring In Learning and Education), Delta GEMS, Valdosta High School Dance Team and Upward Bound.
Jones graduates in May and plans to attend Armstrong Atlantic State University in pursuit of a bachelor of science degree with an emphasis in nursing.
At the club, Jones also makes her presence known by participating in every aspect of the Club’s programs and events. From mentoring and helping younger members with their homework to serving as one of the officers of the Club’s teen service-oriented group, the KeyStone Club, Jones always uses her talents to help others.
Jones understands the importance of giving back and has more than 200 hours of service within the last 12 months in the community. She has volunteered with the local Second Harvest and other organizations in the community.
