JASPER, Fla. — The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Valdosta Police Department, is investigating the apparent kidnapping of a woman from Valdosta who was dropped off in Jasper, Fla., according to Hamilton County Sheriff Harrell Reid.

The suspect, believed to be in his 50s, was caught later by Jacksonville authorities after a BOLO (be on the lookout) was issued.

According to Reid, around 7:30-8 a.m. this morning, a black male approached a woman in Valdosta as she was getting into her car and abducted her by gunpoint. The suspect made the woman drive south on Interstate 75 and then onto US 129 in Hamilton County where he had her turn onto a dirt road behind Hamilton County High School. The suspect made the woman get out of the car. The victim tried to take her handbag with her, but the suspect wouldn’t let her.

Reid said a Hamilton County citizen happened upon the frightened woman and took her to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office where she was interviewed by a Valdosta Police detective who came down to investigate the kidnapping.

The victim’s cell phone, Reid said, was in her handbag and authorities were able to ping the phone and locate the vehicle. Just a few hours later, the suspect’s car was recovered by the Duval County Sheriff’s Office in Jacksonville.

Reid said there was no connection between the victim and the suspect. Their identities are unknown at this time.

More information to come as it becomes available.
