Information on Outformation coming to Charley O’s
By Dean Poling
REMERTON — Outformation plans to be in the house Thursday, June 26, at Charley O’Corley’s with the band’s rambling rock style.
Outformation is Southern rock leaning more toward Widespread Panic (with whom Outformation has worked, no surprise since Outformation guitarist Sam Holt is a former WP member) than the expected Lynyrd Skynyrd mode of Southern rock. Yet, Outformation is its own band with its own sound.
Check out “Into My Arms” on the band’s Traveler’s Rest CD, which if you have to make comparisons, which are both the blessing and curse of writing about music, has a taste of The Band.
Apparently, “Traveler’s Rest,” like the band’s shows, is a taste of where the band is, where it’s going, and where Outformation has been. The song “Anymore” had never been played live when the album was recorded. The opening track “Carnac” had only been played once. Yet, “Toy’s Song” is a song almost as old as the band.
The tracks are blessed with solid arrangements. There are solos but they do not devolve into mindless, innocuous, terminal instrumental sessions. Instead, they are structured solos that have the energy of spontaneity but the architecture of an actual song. Most of Outformation’s songs also tell stories that are rough and raw, funny and moving.
“Traveler’s Rest” is the follow-up album to the band’s national debut, “Tennessee Before Daylight.” The band is Sam Holt, guitar; Grady Upchurch, bass; Jeff “Birddog” Lane, percussion; C.R. Gruver, keyboards; Lee Schwartz, drums.
On the track “Winds,” Outformation is joined on harmonica by the great Mickey Raphael, who has played harmonica for the Willie Nelson Family Band for the past 30 years or so. The CD’s title track, which is also its finale, was composed by Outformation and Widespread Panic. Holt, of course, left Widespread Panic to tour full-time with Outformation.
If the live show has 50 percent of the energy and talent on “Traveler’s Rest,” you may want to travel to Charley O’s for some Outformation.
