Albritton named National Player of the Week

VALDOSTA — Winning Gulf South Conference awards is old hat for Courtney Albritton.

But the Valdosta State junior star accomplished a new feat Wednesday when she was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week. It is the fourth time a Blazer has received the honor and the first since the 2012 national championship season when Alanna Hadley was named the NFCA Pitcher of the Week in late March.

“It is such an honor to be selected for this award, but I feel like it should go to my whole team after the week we all had,” Albritton said in a release. “Brianna Hancock did an amazing job for us in the circle, and when one of us gets things started, we all just seem to play off of it. Who wouldn’t want to back up such great pitching performances by Bri and Maci Fletcher? God chose to give us these talents. It’s our job to make the most of them in his name.”

Albritton, the reigning GSC Player of the Year, certainly did that last week. In 13 at-bats against Miles and Christian Brothers, Albritton had 10 hits, including eight for extra bases and seven home runs. That gave the former Tiftarea Academy  star a .769 average for the five games, with an .813 on-base percentage and an eye-popping 2.462 slugging percentage. She also walked twice, was hit by a pitch and stole a base.”

“It’s a great accomplishment for Courtney,” VSU coach Thomas Macera said in the release. “She’s a student of the game, she works incredibly hard, and all of that shows in her performance week in and week out.

“Courtney is a tough out, and the amazing part is, she’s probably the most humble player I’ve ever coached. No matter how she’s playing at the moment, she continuously puts in the work, and that’s why she is able to consistently perform at such a high level.”

Hitting at least one home run in each of the Blazers’ five games last week, Albritton went 3-for-3 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Buccaneers, with all three hits leaving Steel’s Diamond. Her 16 home runs on the season has her tied for the national lead.
