Valdosta State men's tennis makes South Region

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State men's tennis team got the news it was waiting for Tuesday night when the NCAA released its region tournament brackets.

The Blazers were one of three Gulf South Conference teams in the final South Region rankings and in the seven-team tournament field, which opens the Division II postseason.

Valdosta State, 12-7, was the fifth seed in the region and begins its South tournament play Saturday against fourth-seeded West Alabama in Pensacola, Fla. The Tigers are 20-2, while tournament host and region top seed West Florida is 20-0. The Argonauts await the winner in the preliminary round final Sunday. Valdosta State lost twice to West Alabama, falling 5-4 in Livingston, Ala., on April 5 before falling 5-2 in the GSC tournament in Montgomery, Ala., two weeks later. West Florida also defeated VSU during the season.

The other half of the South Region tournament will take place Monday-Tuesday at Barry and includes Lynn, Rollins and Stillman. The Blazers also lost to Barry, while defeating Rollins out of the South. Armstrong Atlantic, the top seed at the Southeast Regional, and South Carolina-Aiken, the ninth seed in that region, also beat Valdosta State this season, while the Blazers beat Southeast second seed Columbus State and Southeast fourth seed Georgia College.

While the VSU men received good news, the Valdosta State women did not as the Blazers' season is over at 14-5 with two of the defeats coming to West Florida, the lone GSC team to make the six-team South Region tournament field on the women's side. VSU also lost to Armstrong Atlantic and Columbus State, the top two seeds at the Southeast Regional tournament, and Rollins, the fifth seed in the South Region.

The Argos, seeded fourth at 19-4, open the regional Saturday against Rollins at Barry with the host school waiting to face the winner Sunday in the final portion of the preliminary round of the regional. The other half of the regional is at Saint Leo and includes Lynn and Stillman and will be played Monday and Tuesday.
