2013 South Georgia Diamond Brawl

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes Vikings baseball team is set to host the 16th Annual South Georgia Diamond Brawl, featuring 19 teams playing 28 games across four fields.

Games get underway 10:30 a.m. Thursday when Crisp County JV takes on Thomas County Central JV at Noel George Field and continue through Sunday, concluding with Jeff Davis II against Lanier at 5:15 in Lakeland.

The Diamond Brawl provides some of the area’s teams a chance to evaluate the talent on their respective teams and to slowly prepare for the upcoming season by drilling players on fundamentals.

“We are looking at all the new faces, seeing what pieces will fit where,” Vikings head coach Danny Redshaw said. “We like to see which guys are going to compete.”

Lowndes and Valdosta will both play their varsity teams, as well as their JV teams in the tournament. Cook, Lanier, Crisp, and Cairo will have teams in attendance as well as other local teams.

The tournament also provides an economic boon for the schools hosting games at their home parks.

Not only will teams be playing at Lowndes and Valdosta, but at Cook in Adel and Lanier in Lakeland.

“The tournament always helps us raise some money for our Dugout Club,” Redshaw said.

Valdosta JV opens against Cairo at 3 p.m. on Thursday, while both Valdosta and Lowndes’ varsity team will play their first game of the Diamond Brawl at 5:15 p.m. on the same day, Valdosta against Jeff Davis II and Lowndes against Hoover.

Lowndes and Valdosta will play their games at Noel George Field and Bazemore Field, respectively.

While attendance has dropped a bit in recent years, Redshaw isn’t discouraged.

“We’re just looking forward to some good summer baseball.”
